FREE FILM LAB is an intensive 7-week program for AMATEUR FILMMAKERS IN LEIPZIG's EAST.

WORKSHOPS. MENTORSHIPS. Community.

Application Deadline: October 25TH

What is the
Free Film Lab?

The Free Film Lab offers the opportunity for young adults in Leipzig's east to share their perspective through a 7-week guerilla filmmaking program designed for first-time amateur filmmakers aged 16-36. Over the course of 7 weeks, participants will learn the fundamentals of filmmaking, including how to use a camera, record sound, and set up lighting.

There will also be more advanced workshops available for participants who would like to dive deeper into specific topics, like scriptwriting, sound, or documentary. By the end of the first week, participants form groups, and will have 6 weeks to produce a short film together. In the end, each team's film will be screened to the general public at a final gala on December 16th, 2022 at Ost Passage Theater.

FFL’s 2022 Theme:
EAST, Leipzig

The Free Film Lab seeks to empower the residents of East Leipzig to create independent representations of their lifeworld. Film offers is such a medium, allowing for the representation of one's perspective in the form of artistic and political expression.

  • How do I form a group if I am alone?
  • You will have the opportunity to form or join a group of other FFL participants at our November 13th Pitch Party where you can pitch and share ideas for films. Then, you'll be able to form a group of minimum 3 to maximum 10 people.
  • How much does the program cost?
  • Nothing! The Free Film Lab Program is absolutely free — we promise. You do not need to pay for any part of the program, other than your transportation costs. In fact, you will get a small budget to use in order to make your film.
  • Do I need any filmmaking experience?
